somewhere between dead and alive

i'm dying, i know i am, i can feel it. listen up, my wrist is broken, my wisdom teeth are coming in, i've been having weird hallucinatory dreams ( i think because of my fever and pain killers and neo citran) plus i had the stomach flu all weekend (probably brought on by the hangover i had saturday morning) and when the stomach flu ended i got (and still have) what i think to be tonsillitis. plus on friday i accidentally lit my hair on fire, which was covered in hairspray, so now my eyebrow and eyelashes (on one side only) are singed, plus i have super dry skin. also i still havent heard back from my philosophy prof. i'm actually dying.
don knotts died this weekend RIP

dard

my dad was interviewed for the murder case mentioned earlier. in the article it has my dad sitting at his desk, with the by-line
:Mohan was represented by Tom Carey, an experienced lawyer with a passion for Norman Jewison movies

to say passion is a bit of an overstatement, he likes them, but apparently they wanted 1 thing readers could identifiy with, and they chose this slight comment my dad made. also this isn't his office, its in the building where his office is, (its actually an empty office because one of the lawyers died) but they didn't like my dads office as much. one can only assume because there isn't a natural light source, and the desk is much less cluttered.

reality tv, and the spell it casts over me

remember that show joe millionaire? the show where the guy pretended he was a millionaire,(which i don't know how you could EVER think he was wealthy, even if he was new money, he was still a dumb ass, a hotish dumbass construction worker my mom described it as "pathetic shallow people showing they'll do anything to get a dollar", but then shes always a cynic. anyway, the butler, paul, has a NEW reality show which seems kind of like a mix between queer eye and ladette to lady. he takes men and teaches them how to be classy. on the w network. it looks good. but then to me anything with 6th rate faux celebrities looks good to me. also i have to agree with olenas comment that skating with celebrities should be re-titled "skating with 'so called' celebrities". it's gone WAY down hill since joey was kicked off. also i was reading the globe (not "and mail", but the enquirer-esque newspaper) and apparently jodie sweetin who played stephanie on full house, lost her entire fortune to a crystal meth addiction. i know no one really cares but seriously how much does crystal meth cost? like pennies, so imagine how much she would have been doing to spend 200,000$ in 6 months. seriously, if you're going to invest that kind of money, at least take a step up from lye, bleach, paint thinner and battery acid, to say cocaine, or heroin even CRACK would be better. well what actually would be better is if they reunited full house and started it up again, but thats not going to happen. anyway.
oh also apparantly bob saget and candace cameron (danny and dj) held a " dramatic intervention" for her. i see the olsen twins were noticably absent....

kare-okay!

plaster casts, the good old standard, nothing can compare. right now i have this metal splint dealy. its a good deal more comfortable however it has 1 major flaw: it can be removed. this provides a good deal more comfort, but alot less effectiveness. i am not wearing it right now. thats not good because i am supposed to wear it all the time. the option of taking it off, means that i WILL take it off. it goes against any medical advice i have recieved. stick to the classics, bring back the plaster.

number nine number nine

also i fractured my wrist... left one at least... this is number nine

Wednesday, February 15, 2006

you're so vain, you probably think this blog is about you

this seemed to be kind of relevant if you refer back to my skating with celebrities entries, although skating is classy, and well dancing is just kind of sad (drew lachey much...)
a) do i LOOK old? i was singing you're so vain at karaoke the other evening (and what an evening it was) but then i wasn't singing it properly, because although i know the chorus thats the only part of the song i know, and so the rest of it was sung to the tune of the chorus, which it is not normally sung in, in a key not normally sung in, anyway.... these oldish middle aged men were at the front, and were trying to help me, and one was like, trying to hit on me and pretend that i was young (which i AM) and was like hey darlin you remember when this song came out? you musta been in diapers..... UM HELLO, it came out in 1973! not only was i not born, but i WOULDN'T be born until 12 years later, my dad was still in law school and my parents had not met. i am NOT 33 or 34 i am 21.

b) have i started dressing like a metrosexual MAN? a boyish man on the bus had the exact same outfit as me, but in different colours. 1) he was wearing a scarf like mine, 2) he was wearing almost the same coat as mine 3) we both had mp3 players (which by the way i HATE the stupid pods for your ears, they are uncomfortable and can cause early deaffness) and 4) was wearing jeans and the same shoes as me....... as i'm writing this i realize there are actually not that many similarities....

c) i am going to write a story about alexis' dad, and or one act play, his life is super scandalous and depressing.

d) my dad's murder case is being serialized in the hamilton spectator
go to www.thespec.com and then you go to the post mortem section in the main page, its interesting like pseudo canadian csi... in writing and without the plot twists

e) why is paris hilton being nominated to play mother theresa? has the world gone mental? she's had not 1 but 2 sex tapes come out in the past year. apart from that, she also doesn't look like a haggard old nun, and correct me if i'm wrong, but i don't think they had the same accent....

and finally a semi updated subway lingo dictionary

landsdowne = trashy (as in oh my god thats so landsdowne)
kipling = out of the way, a hassle (i don't want to go there its so...kipling)

pape= awkward or embarassing (it was TRES pape)
bathurst= indie cool (yeah its got a nice bathurst vibe)
rosedale= classy (julia is soooo rosedale)
ossington and or finch= sketchy (i don't want to go there its a little well ossington)
highpark/runneymede/jane = nice (yeah its hp/r/j)
dundas west= smells bad (eww what dundas wests?)
feel free to remind me of more. i forgot a lot of them

baby, its cold outside.

i swear to god, it's no wonder obesity is one of the leading causes of death. food just tastes too good. it's my mom's fault, we're going to be on doctor phil in ten years, her crying and me 700 pounds via satelite because they can't get me out of the house. she'll be all "it's my fault, my cooking and shopping skills were too good, i didn't know she would like bread at 2 am so much" and i'll be like "damn straight its your fault, pay for me to get gastric bypass before i die biznatch" and doctor phil will be like "don't eat your feelings" and i'll be like "i'm not, the food is just so delicious" ...so, there is an ever so slight possibility that i missed my mid-term exam for intro to logic.....i didn't even think about it until now, but , a) i was sick last week and didn't go to class this week because i was on my reading week frame of mind. b) i started late, have only been to 2 classes and don't have a syllubus, and c) everyone i know had mid-term exams this week, while i have been living a stress free existence. so i should probably do something about this..... maybe i'll go to my doctor and pretend i had an attack then get a note, then go to the teacher and cry...

somewhere beyond the sea......

yeah definitely i'll get right on that trade blah blah blah (insert topic here) poor olena, picked of her hang nail in a super unhygenic fashion. and now she has to get chunky peices of puss cut out of it routinely. its gross, but then again, she deserves it for picking a hangnail then picking her ass. ps, i'm not going to dignifiy your question about jacob dylan with an answer, i will only say that it doesn't really surprise me for a guelphite, also had you never noticed the family resembalance?

o to tha prah

i don't understand the big deal about james frey and his oprah bookclub biznatch. a) to me if it's a good book the means justifies the end. b) the book memoirs of a geisha is mostly elaboration, is not by a geisha but is by a history professor, is not a real memoir but is being praised because it's a great book blah blah blah. i like the book, but it is clearly marketed as a memoir even if the back of the book says historical fiction. c) all writers elaborate, you think that hunter s thompson had precise accuracy in his re-telling? or james joyce his portrait was loosely based on actual events but not definitive. what about virginia woolfs a room of ones own she wasn't actually rejected from speaking at oxford. i haven't read james frey's book, but you can't just denounce it on the fact that you thought it was fact and it was elaboration.

a bit belated, but sad none the less.

elliot smith died in 2003? what the jesus. i made a comment the other day about him sounding like a nick drake gram parsons esque modern day singer. and now i find out (thanks to deadoralive.com, which by the way, i wasn't looking for him but i thought that accidental stabbing was a catergory) it is quite mysterious, they don't think anyone killed him, but he was stabbed, which is quite a weird way to commit suicide. anyway. i'm upset, why do they hot die young (eg nick drake, gram parsons, elliot smith, james dean. he sings needle in the hay among other things. this is depressing. also i'm kind of getting into the song you're so vain by carly simon, and want to know very badly who it's about. don't bother giving suggestions, she won't tell anyone so its all just speculation.

blah..... good ol' noamy

Beyond the Ballot
Noam Chomsky
Khaleej Times, January 6, 2006
The US President Bush called last month’s Iraqi elections a "major milestone in the march to democracy." They are indeed a milestone — just not the kind that Washington would welcome. Disregarding the standard declarations of benign intent on the part of leaders, let’s review the history. When Bush and Britain’s Prime Minister, Tony Blair, invaded Iraq, the pretext, insistently repeated, was a "single question": Will Iraq eliminate its weapons of mass destruction?
Within a few months this "single question" was answered the wrong way. Then, very quickly, the real reason for the invasion became Bush’s "messianic mission" to bring democracy to Iraq and the Middle East. Even apart from the timing, the democratisation bandwagon runs up against the fact that the United States has tried, in every possible way, to prevent elections in Iraq.

Last January’s elections came about because of mass nonviolent resistance, for which the Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani became a symbol. (The violent insurgency is another creature altogether from this popular movement.) Few competent observers would disagree with the editors of the Financial Times, who wrote last March that "the reason (the elections) took place was the insistence of the Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, who vetoed three schemes by the US-led occupation authorities to shelve or dilute them."

Elections, if taken seriously, mean you pay some attention to the will of the population. The crucial question for an invading army is: "Do they want us to be here?"

There is no lack of information about the answer. One important source is a poll for the British Ministry of Defence this past August, carried out by Iraqi university researchers and leaked to the British Press. It found that 82 per cent are "strongly opposed" to the presence of coalition troops and less than 1 per cent believe they are responsible for any improvement in security.

Analysts of the Brookings Institution in Washington report that in November, 80 per cent of Iraqis favoured "near-term US troop withdrawal." Other sources generally concur. So the coalition forces should withdraw, as the population wants them to, instead of trying desperately to set up a client regime with military forces that they can control. But Bush and Blair still refuse to set a timetable for withdrawal, limiting themselves to token withdrawals as their goals are achieved.

There’s a good reason why the United States cannot tolerate a sovereign, more or less democratic Iraq. The issue can scarcely be raised because it conflicts with firmly established doctrine: We’re supposed to believe that the United States would have invaded Iraq if it was an island in the Indian Ocean and its main export was pickles, not petroleum.

As is obvious to anyone not committed to the party line, taking control of Iraq will enormously strengthen US power over global energy resources, a crucial lever of world control. Suppose that Iraq were to become sovereign and democratic. Imagine the policies it would be likely to pursue. The Shia population in the South, where much of Iraq’s oil is, would have a predominant influence. They would prefer friendly relations with Shia Iran.

The relations are already close. The Badr brigade, the militia that mostly controls the south, was trained in Iran. The highly influential clerics also have long-standing relations with Iran, including Sistani, who grew up there. And the Shia-dominant interim government has already begun to establish economic and possibly military relations with Iran.

Furthermore, right across the border in Saudi Arabia is a substantial, bitter Shia population. Any move toward independence in Iraq is likely to increase efforts to gain a degree of autonomy and justice there, too. This also happens to be the region where most of Saudi Arabia’s oil is. The outcome could be a loose Shia alliance comprising Iraq, Iran and the major oil regions of Saudi Arabia, independent of Washington and controlling large portions of the world’s oil reserves. It’s not unlikely that an independent bloc of this kind might follow Iran’s lead in developing major energy projects jointly with China and India.

Iran may give up on Western Europe, assuming that it will be unwilling to act independently of the United States. China, however, can’t be intimidated. That’s why the United States is so frightened by China.

China is already establishing relations with Iran — and even with Saudi Arabia, both military and economic. There is an Asian energy security grid, based on China and Russia, but probably bringing in India, Korea and others. If Iran moves in that direction, it can become the lynchpin of that power grid.

Such developments, including a sovereign Iraq and possibly even major Saudi energy resources, would be the ultimate nightmare for Washington. Also, a labour movement is forming in Iraq, a very important one. Washington insists on keeping Saddam Hussein’s bitter anti-labour laws, but the labour movement continues its organising work despite them.

Their activists are being killed. Nobody knows by whom, maybe by insurgents, maybe by former Baathists, maybe by somebody else. But they’re persisting. They constitute one of the major democratising forces that have deep roots in Iraqi history, and that might revitalise, also much to the horror of the occupying forces. One critical question is how Westerners will react. Will we be on the side of the occupying forces trying to prevent democracy and sovereignty? Or will we be on the side of the Iraqi people?
